The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Development Director for our Go Red For Women (GRFW) and Heart Walk (HW) events in Sioux Falls, SD . This position will be a home-office based position . The Development Director is responsible and accountable for recruitment, training, campaign goal and management activities to ensure efficient growth and development of the assigned GRFW Luncheon and the Heart Walk events. The Development Director is responsible for securing local sponsorship income, individual donations and auction items, in partnership with the immediate supervisor to support the events and to maximize overall income potential. Development Director will adhering to specific “Best Practices” and staying with the American Heart Association’s fundraising cost guidelines.
This position will also be responsible for working with Schools (K-12 market) in this territory. The Development Director is responsible for applying proven sales techniques to acquire new accounts and renew and grow existing accounts. This is done to achieve revenue generation and program goals. Handle overall implementation and promotion of American Heart Association events in schools. Prospect and secure school participation. Assist schools in meeting fundraising goals.
Essential Job Duties:
Responsible for planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the Go Red For Women and the Heart Walk events in the Sioux Falls, SD metro area. Assure that the vision and strategic direction for both of the events are in alignment with the organization’s goals and objectives. Secures sponsorships, individual donations and auction items.
Provide staff support in the area of volunteer recruitment and training, event logistics, year-round planning, cultivation, and sponsorship and auction item solicitation for the GRFW and Heart Walk events.
Responsible for the American Heart Association cause promotion in schools that are existing accounts and potential accounts within the K-12 market. Recruit, train and develop schools and volunteers at multiple levels throughout the schools assigned.
Supports in developing, monitoring, an annual working plan with dollar and volunteer recruitment goals, budget and timelines for the events. Develop contingency plans, as needed to successfully complete fundraising activities.
Develop profiles on the top businesses within the assigned geographic area with a documented plan to secure their involvement. Completes company goal setting worksheets and prioritizes companies by their potential.
Develop relationship-building strategies to include making personal sponsorship and donor visits on a monthly and quarterly basis. Develop effective working relationship with high level-executives and individual donors.
Work closely with the Communications Director on the promotion and communications plan.

Bachelor’s or some college plus experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree. Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1 ½ years experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.
Must have at least 1 to 2 years of experience in fundraising, outside sales or in a non-profit organization in a similar capacity. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.
Knowledge of community organization, sales, fundraising, and marketing principles, practices, techniques, and trends.
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation, and training. Skill in written communications to include clear and concise narrative reports, evaluations and similar narrative pieces.
Ability to read, comprehend and analyze number goals, as well as fundraising reports. Skill in use of spreadsheet/database analysis.
Ability to do daily travel up to 75% and overnight travel up to 10%.
Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.
Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down into smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting and/or moving.
